II. 3 HOW TO PARAPHRASE USE SYNONYM IN IELTS WRITING
1. USING COMPLEX Sentences
It is essential to use new constructs whenever you have the same expressions but don’t want to be duplicated. So we can refer to the following ways:
WRITING TASK 1:
Writing task 1 has a lot of “land” for you to “act”. With expressions like increase, decrease, same, different, highest, fluctuate, etc., we have many ways to express it. Let’s get to the main point:
– There are more men than women => Women outnumber men. (Use a sentence pattern that uses the word “outnumber” which is not repeated but still expresses the idea more fully, moreover, the word “outnumber” is a very well-evaluated vocabulary.)
– The biggest difference is that… => The most noticeable difference/ The disparity is noticeable.
– Instead of writing 2 simple sentences that have opposite ideas about data, use the complex sentence pattern “…while…” – describe the opposite idea. Example: “The figure for high school students who do exercise regularly was just 12%, while the percentage for seniors in reaching its peak at 70%”.
– It is better to use compound sentences such as “The fact that… + to be” than to write a single sentence.
WRITING TASK 2:
- For Writing Task 2, we should prioritize using relative clauses to write compound sentences instead of simple sentences.
For example, we should write the sentence “People tend to rely on a lot on technical devices, which are much more innovative and convenient than ever before” instead of “People tend to rely on a lot on technical devices. Those are much more innovative and convenient than ever before”.
- If we have used many forms of active sentences, we should use passive sentences.
For example, with the previous expression, we write: “To address the problem, we should use public transport” but if we want to use this style again, we should write it in the passive voice.
If necessary, we should use other synonyms to diversify our vocabulary => we should write: “To tackle the problem, public transport should be encouraging to use” will be much better.
- It is highly recommended to use conjunctions to connect sentences but MUST be in formal form: nevertheless, However; In addition, Add, Besides (More); As a result, consequence, It leads to…, It results in…
- It is preferable to use the sentence pattern “…while…” to talk about two opposing ideas (Usually paraphrase the topic in the Introduction or use it to change ideas). For example: “While it is undeniable that living in large cities brings us a huge number of benefits, its drawbacks cannot be ignored.”
