Exam Focus

Multiple Choices

Multiple Choices is one of the most difficult types of IELTS Reading because there will often be 1 wrong answer that looks like the right answer, making it difficult for us to distinguish. To do this well, we should follow these steps:

Step 1. Use the information and keywords in the question to find the answer

Step 2. Read and understand the piece of information related to the question

Step 3. Analyze the answer choices. Usually in the form of Multiple Choices, there will be 2 easily identifiable wrong answers and we can immediately rule them out

Step 4. Analyze the difference between the remaining two answers

Apply the strategy above to the following question:

What is the writer’s main point in the first paragraph?

A. Soil is very important to humans

B. People use soil for many different purposes

C. Soil degradation is a serious problem that can affect human’s lives globally

D. Farming has been around for a long time

Step 1. Use the information and keywords in the question to find the answer

In this article, the keyword is “in the first paragraph”.

Step 2. Read and understand the piece of information related to the question

“More than a third of the world’s soil is endangered, according to a recent UN report. If we don’t slow the decline, all farmable soil could be gone in 60 years. Since soil grows 95% of our food, and sustains human life in other more surprising ways, that is a huge problem.”

Pandemic: “More than a third of the world’s land is at risk, according to a recent United Nations report. If we don’t slow this decline, all arable land will be gone in the next 60 years. Because land grows more than 95% of our food, and sustains human life in more surprising ways, this is a big deal.”

Step 3. Analyze the answer choices. Usually in the form of Multiple Choices, there will be 2 wrong answers that are easy to identify and we can immediately rule them out.

In this question, that is the answer:

1. People use soil for many different purposes

2. Farming has been around for a long time (Agriculture has been around for a long time)

Step 4. Analyze the difference between the remaining two answers

1. Soil is very important to humans

2. Soil degradation is a serious problem that can affect human’s lives globally.

Although there is information in the article like “because soil grows more than 95% of our food, and sustains human life in more surprising ways” to talk about the importance of soil (choice A) , this piece of information is provided with others such as “More than a third of the land in the world is at risk”, “If we do not slow this decline, all arable land will be will disappear in the next 60 years.” The author mentions the roles of soil to emphasize that if land is lost, human life will be seriously affected.

So answer C is the correct answer.

Let’s practice together.
